Ghilcrest Wireframe Mesh by Robaato Ghilcrest Wireframe Mesh by Robaato
Thought you guys would like to see the main town, Ghilcrest in its entirety.

For those who haven't been following the blog, Alan and I decided to do all architectural elements of the environments in 3D first. We laid everything out in sketch format, came up with the building stylings, and then Alan took it to Maya and modeled each building and prop. We then laid it all out to our original sketches.

Now it's time to illustrate and render it.

woah man, thas one big town... okay at this point my one and ONLY concern is: will the gameplay be up to par?

tight responsive controls. No issues with the camera. I'm worried and excited at the, same. Damn. Time!

Haha, chill, bro~

Alan and myself is very OCD when it comes to the gameplay, haha. I still play the old school stuff enough to reference from. :)

What's the design process you go through to make buildings? I always have so much trouble making them look like believable buildings, and I'm sure others do too.

References always help especially if your setting is based on certain eras or themes and act as the building blocks for the whole. Imagining how it'd be set up inside for ease of use allows you to visualize a frame for the building and then it's down to tweaking things based on the other factors like personality of the building owner or an overall look and feel you're trying to achieve.

At least that's how we went about this. We didn't want to just create a town and have the people give it life but have the town itself seem like it has a personality of its own. Hopefully it came through enough! :noes:

All buildings will be accessible!

The broken down buildings are for town repair side quests. So up to the player, those will be eventually available as well.

That's a great idea to keep consistency, well done.
The size of it looks just right for getting around as well, and unlike many RPG's, the houses are actually to scale and not randomly enlarged when the character enters it.

it's interesting that something like this has to be done using 3D models, for a 2D game.

:iconrobaato:
Robaato Featured By Owner Dec 3, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
It's done quite often for efficiency reasons, especially considering how small our team is. These are basically the equivalent to a 2D "base sketch". So really, we're not using ANY 3D in the game. This was done mainly for keeping everything within scale. We just went a bit extra for the style of the architecture. The game will still very much be 2D.
