2-7-12: 'Hey Serge...' by Robaato 2-7-12: 'Hey Serge...' by Robaato
Day 7: SatelliteSoda February Draw-A-Day. CHRONO CROSS.

Okay, I'm not crazy about Cross. A lot of people gonna hate me for this, but...

First off, in my opinion, it didn't hold a candle to it's predecessor, Chrono Trigger in a lot of ways. TOO many characters! There was hardly any character development in the game for you to grow an association with the characters other than the main ones.

Another reason I personally feel is that though the battle system was unique, it still wasn't as exciting as Trigger's Dual/Triple tech system. 1 character usually owned 1 or two techs each. Some of them doubled, making it kinda stale. I was much more content with 6-7 party members with their own arsenal of duals and triples.

Lastly, for them to even keep the same prefix on the title, it broke a LOT of canonical ties with Trigger. Not gonna spoil it for anyone who have never played it, but yeah... Lots of plot holes when linking to Trigger. I also thought that only having one alternate dimension isn't really "time-traveling" when Trigger had multiple eras and periods and all affected each other. Trigger is still definitely the "Time-traveling RPG" to this day to me.

Other than that, Mitsuda's bossin' soundtrack and the overall game was actually good. Just not a good "Chrono" title in my honest opinion.

I agree with you. Chrono Cross had too many changes from its predecessor and does not feel like a sequel. And the last 10 minutes really ruined the game, I mean the part on the beach where you can talk with Chrono, Lucca and Marle. Where reveal like seven plot twists including the oldest cliche of all, the antagonist turns out to be your father.

Chrono Cross was more about crossing to another dimension rather than time travelling, hence the Cross. However I completely agree with you, Chrono Cross is a very poor sequel but it's actually a great game. About half way into the game I was hating this game so such for what is was doing to CT's canon but then I said to myself: "This game is like a FF game, it's not a sequel to CT" and bam!! I started enjoying the game like crazy.

Plan this game like if it was it's own game and not a sequel. This a great game with some little easter eggs from CT. Heck kinda like the new JJ Abrams Star Trek, it spits the Strar Trek lore and technology but it's a great space movie.

YAY! Chrono Cross! The most confusing story/plot I have ever played in a game EVER! Or maybe it was because I was young when I played it...I should attempt it again to see if it will actually make sense to me.

Trigger wasn't nearly as confusing if I recall....

Hahaha, not really, I just felt Cross didn't hold up to being a "Chrono" game. If it was titled differently, it would've been regarded highly by Trigger fans as well, but I personally feel it didn't up itself beyond Trigger's level. It's still a very good RPG though!

I know exactly what you mean. The first time I played this game I felt the same way, but after I played it again I think I changed my mind about it. Although, it's a sequel you to Chrono Trigger. In some ways you really have to look at it as something entirely separate from the original. I do agree. The soundtrack and the environment I think were what made the game pretty amazing in my opinion. The environment especially, since it was so unique compared to a lot of other games. I think you have to look at Chrono Cross as a more abstract game that is loosely tied to Chrono Trigger. If you think about comparing to Chrono Trigger, it becomes less desirable. But if you look at it individually as a game it's actually pretty great. Another game that came out around the same time as Chrono Cross was Legend of Legaia. Not too many people have played or heard of it, but it was great RPG. Great characters and it had a great story. And a pretty unique battle system once you get past the beginning and with the castle.

Legend of Legaia is on my list of daily things to draw up, most definitely a slept-on title that game is.

Oh, you've played it? It's my favorite RPG game. That'd be cool if you drew a Legend of Legaia picture. There's hardly any Legend of Legaia art out there. Avoid playing Legend of Legaia 2. Legend of Legaia 2 isn't as good as Legend of Legaia. Legend of Legaia 2 is like an alternate universe of the original and not as good. But having said that Legend of Legaia is amazing, isn't it? Another one I might suggest is Legend of Dragoon (although some people are rather harsh on that series). There's also Xenosaga, which is not the greatest game to play but it's interesting and has some nice aspects I suppose. One game I never could get into, because the battle environment was too redundant is Vagrant Story. It looks like a really cool game, and it might have a great story but it's very hard to get into. If you can get through the long beginning it might be something to consider, but I was never a big fan of it.

I can't really hold much of an argument since I never played Trigger. (I saw my older bro play some of it once, but I guess he didn't like it and never continued it.)
But, I love Chrono Cross! It's sad to see so many people bash it down here, I loved the characters. The music was awesome too.
But, anywho... Nice job on your drawing! It's cool. ^^;

First, great pic! Second, I agree with what many people here have said about Chrono Cross. There were a lot of great aspects about the game that were, sadly, overshadowed by a poor narrative structure.

There is some evidence to suggest that the game's development may have been rushed near the end. Perhaps it was going over-budget, or maybe some of the staff was transferred to work on other projects. Regardless, I believe the foundation of the game's flaws was in the large number of playable characters. Not only did this result in poor character development, but it also loosened the plot to the point where the story started spinning out of control. This was why things linked to Chrono Trigger so poorly in the end. A good story needs discipline.

Still, we shouldn't leave it at that. The original game may be set in stone, but the underlying story is timeless. All of the pieces of a compelling epic are there waiting to be used. Perhaps it's time that someone rewrote Chrono Cross. I don't think it's impossible as long as the author is willing to make some hard choices.

between trigger and cross is another game, named "Radical Dreamers" for the SNES that's why you can't link the story, before cross and after trigger happened a lot of things, and i think cross is a great game, XD but i still in love with trigger ;P

I actually really liked Chrono Cross. But to be fair it's relation to Chrono Trigger is veeery vague.
I think they made a game called Radical Dreamers that was supposed to kinda be an introduction for Chrono Cross? But I never got anywhere in that game. It was tedious.

Anyway, lovely picture!
You always do such an amazing job with the colouring. :>

Sequels very rarely meet the expectations of their predecessor, however, there are quite a few places in Chronopolis/Dead Sea areas that give some more information to link the two together.
I personally love both games myself, and therefore spent a lot of time playing both to get all the endings and whatnot, so maybe if you haven't explored those two areas much, you may find something more to piece things together. :3

I know what you mean though, I wish they added more depth to linking the games too, not just filling it with 50+ characters that don't have much room to develop at all, due to PS1 limitations and on top of the time it takes to unlock everyone, and finish the game 7 times for the endings... @__@ They could have made 10 or less and given you side quests for their stories instead.

All that being said, fantastic cell shading on this XD I would buy the crap outta chrono trigger/cross anime if it existed.

Thank you! :3

Yeah, I played Cross out because I really wanted to see the link, and it was *kinda* there, but *kinda* wasn't. It left me kinda wanting more.

After seeing the cutscenes on the PSX Trigger, I wanted a full fledge anime baddddd. If I remember correctly, there was a small Chrono Trigger OVA made a long time ago... Yup. Here it is: [link] But it focused more on Gato and a Nuu than anything else. Not that anything's wrong with Gato... Gato's song is the best'est song. :)

I completely agree! Visually, Chrono Cross was very appealing to the eyes and the soundtrack was AMAZING! Still, not quite on par with Trigger. It was fun and had a good story if you let it stand on it's own, but being in the shadow of Trigger, it should have been a lot more than it was. Worth a play through, though.

Very nice work, too! I also really like this setting for the colors. Thanks for sharing!

I remember my friend talking about how he beat Chrono Trigger, then I ask him if he's played Chrono Cross and he's like "what?"
Personally, I havent really played Chrono Trigger, and Chrono Cross is just kinda gathering dust until I can get my PS2 working but I found Cross fun and thats what matters. I barely played Cross either mind you but still.

Cross has its own positive points yes, but it still pales in comparison to what Trigger has achieved. Overall, I enjoyed both titles.

I will say that Cross became so convoluted with messed-up "space-time continuum" thingies that it usually loses you in its supposedly "deep" story, which was kind of a let-down. Trigger just had this whole grand/epic adventure feel that NEVER lets up and it constantly blasts you with the fact that what you do in a certain period AFFECTS the whole world.

THAT and Trigger had art made by Akira Toriyama...which is always enough to win anyone over. Period.

Before this becomes and gaming commentary....Nicely done pic there, It was enough to make me feel nostalgic and "nerdy" at the same time. Awesome. :headbang:

This game was an example of how poorly an actual sequel can be from Square. Mind you, it was a lot stronger than some of their more recent sequels, but not by enough.

The tech system was stupid, there was practically no character development for anyone except Glenn and Kid (which was a result of the massive number of characters, as you said), and the way they tried to weave plot points from CT in was just poorly executed. The whole idea that the main cast were all KILLED is just stupid >_>

They could have cut out 75% of the characters and the game would've been far better by that act alone.

I understand that a lot of people may not have liked Chrono Cross. But you have to admit the soundtrack was very nice. I enjoyed cross a lot. I feel if it was a stand alone game from Chrono Trigger It would've gotten a better response from the trigger fans.

Wel I'm glad you made one for the cross fan Rob, greatly appreciated. Makes wanna make my own.
